Les walked the streets of Naboo for some time looking for any sign of the Force. His Force searching abilities were not as attuned as his old masters, but they were enough for the average Jedi.
As he rounded a corner, he felt a sensation he hadn't felt in many many years. It was like smelling a smell that might remind you of your mother. But Les never knew his mother...unless...
He stopped for a moment and closed his eyes tight, stretching out with the Force. He tried his best to feel with the Force to locate whatever it was that made the sensation breath through his system. But as soon as it came, it vanished, like it didn't want to be found. He knew that trick though. His master had taught it to him.
Les moved through the street guiding himself with the Force until he came to a very small door. He stood infront of the door starring at it for a moment in a stunned sensation. He didn't know what to do now. It had been so long...His hand's shaking, he reached up and knocked on the door.
Brandon was bordering on impatience, he was bored and tired. He wanted to get something to eat and was on the point of saying this to Les when he noticed the changed in his stance. Suddenly he strode with purpose and Brandon quickened his pace to keep up.
Bewildered he ducked past people trying to keep pace with Les who was moving like a Kath Hound following the scent of blood. When they stopped outside a door Brandon looked to Les to guess the next move. Again he was about to speak when for a split second he felt the weird reverberation in the force. Like the wave that a deep sound makes in a room. " What is that? " brandon said assuming that Les felt it too.
Les half smiled as the door began to open, "My mother..." He said in hushed amazement.
Brandon's eyes widened but he smmothed his features into a calm smirk. "Why so nervous, Have you broken curfew?" he barked a laugh
Serenity had made her way back into the kitchen, putting her gardening basket back in it's place. She was pulling off her apron when she heard the knock on the door. She didn't take the time to feel who it might be, her faith in the Force waning more and more. She hung up her apron, then walked past her small living room into the entrance way. Brushing off her long, white tunic and linen pants, she opened the door.
What stood on the other side could have sent her into shock. It was a little hard to recognize the man on the other side. But he was so familiar to her. She knew him, would have known him if she'd been rendered blind and deaf. He had aged, but then again, so had she. Her once long brown hair was now cut to her shoulders, and now lightly dusted with gray. Her face hadn't changed- she was blessed with only a few small wrinkles around her scars. When her brain finally kicked in, a bright, warm, motherly smile covered her face. "Les Crafter. It took you long enough to come and see me." She said, opening her arms for a hug that was long over due.
Brandon didnt know what he expected but it wasnt this, when the woman opened the door he felt a ripple of power around her. The force could be deceptive sometimes. Stepping back a few steps he tried to remove himself from the scence.
Les laughed out loud and took her in his arms in a strong but gentle hug that only she would appreciate. He smiled so brightly and chuckled so much he almost forgot to take notice of his surroundings. He sighed deeply and let her go, but still held onto her arms for a moment, looking at her. "You look very well Serenity! The Force has been good to you!"
As he took another step back on the steps he looked back at Brandon, "I'm sorry, this is Brandon...Brandon Kamatura. He's from the Jedi Temple on Yavin 4."
She smiled at him, laughing as well. "You look well! Last I heard, you were dead. To see you standing before me is quite a shock." She said, laughing once more. "You must get that from Tal." She said softly, the truth hurting more then she thought it would.
She looked at Brandon and couldn't hide her shock, "Kamatura... Dante's son?" She asked. She didn't even know Dante had survived, let alone had time to reproduce. "Temple on Yavin 4? I don't think I follow you, Les..."
" Grand - son " murmered Brandon. " I only found out myself a few months back. Apparently back when my grand dad was some bad ass Sith he had a son who then had son which was me"
Brandon tried to introduce some levity to the situation, it was so weird to think that this woman had lived with and known his grandfather. A huge part of his past that was missing to him. He almost felt these people had no right to know more than him.
Les felt Brandon's agitation and made a note of it to speak to him later. But not now, now was a time for happiness. He nodded, "Indeed his grand son. Back when he was a 'bad ass' JEDI." He said with a look at Brandon and grinned slightly.
He looked back up at Serenity and sighed deeply, "May we come in? I have so many questions. I'll tell you all about the Jedi Temple and everything that has happened so far."
Serenity laughed, hearing so much of Dante in the young man. "I'm being rude, aren't I?" She said, shaking her head. She stepped back, allowing the two entrance into her home. It was cozy, with a large sitting area, but very personal, with pictures and holocron's all over. She closed the door behind them as they walked in, smiling fondly at the two. "Can I offer you something? I've got a batch of cookies that I've just made. You know me and my sweet tooth." She said, moving into the large, spacious kitchen. She pulled out 3 glasses, moving to get some tea for her guests. "You have to tell me what's happened since I last saw you. From what Tal told me, you died in his arms. Of course, he was a little beyond himself at that point."
Les and Brandon walked inside and he smiled at how welcoming and loving it was. He could feel the love in the Force, but could also feel the pain and lose. He only assumed it meant that his old master was dead.
They sat down on a couple chairs and took some tea and cookies that she had offered. "So Brandon and I are on the search for Master Kamatura. We are looking for any signs of where he might be or anything about his whereabouts in general. I had heard of signs of him on Naboo or someone who might know of his whereabouts. I guess I was right."
He took a cookie and munched down on it smiling, "Wonderful as usual." He swallowed the wonderfulness and sighed, "After Master Mantalus thought I was dead, he buried me on that planet. I infact was infected with some kind of sleeping virus that basically halts all functions of the body, but keeps it alive. So after a few years, I woke up and started walking around as if nothing else had happened. I was confused and not sure what had happened. But I was able to get ahold of a transport and convince them to transport me off world. Eventually I just wondered the galaxy until the Empire died and Luke Skywalker started his Jedi Temple on Yavin 4. I went there and explained who I was and was welcomed with open arms."
Brandon sort of tuned out during the exchange. He was unhappy and he didnt know why, he couldn't figure out why it annoyed him being here... he guessed it was like a reminder of all he had missed. All he would never have.
He didnt drink the tea, he just stared into space
Serenity was still trying to recover from the fact that he wasn't dead, like she thought he had been all these years. "If I had known you were alive, I would have come for you. I shouldn't have trusted what Tal said, not completely, anyways. In his final days, he was a different man. Not the Tal that we knew. He was broken, and I know that it was somewhat my fault. I've mostly come to terms with it." She said, taking a small bite of her cookie.
"As for Dante, I haven't seen him in almost 10 years. We crossed paths the same time I found Tal again. We all went to see Yoda, spent some time there. But after that, everything changed. Tal Jr. was still so young. I didn't want the image of his father to be tainted by what he had become in his final days. Dante held him at bay for us, giving us time to flee. I'm not proud of abandoning either of them. But I couldn't be the one to kill Tal. Not when he'd turned so evil. Dante could, he knew his struggle. Dante didn't contact me after that. I always hoped he had found some peace in the world." She said, tears swimming in her eyes. She had so much regret for what had happened.
Les was stunned at what he had heard. Tal Mantalus evil? That was impossible. He knew that Tal would have been a formidable foe. He was a master with the lightsaber but so was Dante. They were both perfect matches. But with Master Yoda there, Dante would have had the upper hand.
Les nodded at the story and put a hand on her knee, "I'm sure he is one with the Force Serenity. He was my master just as much your husband. You were the closest things to parents I ever had. He would have controlled it in the end, Master Dante would have made sure of that. You shouldn't hold yourself responsible for anything but protecting your son." He smiled to her, hoping it would help.
Brandon wanted to change the subject, he wanted to find out all he could and he wanted to use all the time he had with Serenity.
" Tell me about Dante " ha added firmly
She smiled fondly, "You're a lot like him, from what I can tell. He always spoke his mind, just like you do. He kept to himself, mostly, but trusted in his friends. He had a lot of inner demons, but he figured them out. He was a great man." She said, thinking back on the time they had spent together. "I wish Tal were still alive. He would have been the one to ask. Him and Dante were great friends. Tal actually helped Dante change from Darksaber to the man I knew."
Looking back at Les, she shook her head, "I did what was easiest. Not what was right. But protecting the only son I've got left is what mattered most."
Brandon nodded, he closed his eyes and tried to imagine what Dante looked like. In his eyes he saw a man standing over a burned out ruin of a village, his dark features showed cruelty and pain. The image held for a minute then changed to the same man but kinder, calmer. Training with a young boy, a young boy with green eyes and black hair. Dante felt love for this child, like a father.
The image slipped and Brandon snapped his eyes open.. " Seth Kelleso " he murmered to himself
Les's head snapped to the side and he looked at Brandon sharply, "What did you just say?" He had never mentioned that name to him before, "How do you know that name?"
"Huh?" replied Brandon, " Oh its just a name that came into my head randomly, i was just thinking about what Dante might look like and his name amongst others came into my head. Why?"
Brandon was confused by the suddenly stern look on Les's face.
Les looked at Brandon hard for a moment then loosened his tight muscles, "He was Master Kamatura's padawan. He died a long time ago." He turned himself in his seat to Brandon, "You saw this? What exactly did you see?"
Serenity was amazed by the powers that this boy seem to have. "You're very strong with the Force." She said, giving the boy a smile. "Seth and Les were about the same age, but Seth was killed. He died too young, before he even got a chance to become a Jedi. It was hard on us all, but I think Dante blamed himself for his death, in some ways. What exactly did you see, if you don't mid sharing?" She asked, knowing that edgy males responded better when they were given a choice.
Brandon recoiled slightly in his chair before answering, jeesh it was just a name how was he supposed to know. He tried to think, all the time aware that he had just turned the focus of attention away from what he wanted to know.
" Um there was a man training with a young boy with emerald green eyes, i think that was Seth. There were others. A blue woman with a twilek talking to her. A young man weaving flames out of thin air..."
Brandon screwed his eyes closed again to see the image again " The man with the fire, he seems so angry. There is another woman talking to him, she loves him very much but is slightly afraid of him."
He strained his thoughts again, they were slipping.
" I see, Anger... Dante is holding a dead body... Its seth. A man is running to him.. he is trying to calm him. He seems to know Dante. Dante is ignoring him and fleeing. The man is chasing him.. he cares."
In a flash Brandon opened his eyes and his eyes were clouded over. Seconds later they cleared and Brandon grabbed his head.. " OucH " he muttered
Les half grinned, "You have an unusually strong will of the past Force. Very impressive Brandon. What you saw was Seth's death and how it almost ruined Master Kamatura. Sometimes these visions can be painful if you push too hard. Be careful. Also, be careful what you see. Just because you have seen it in the past, does not mean it is to be obsessed over. What has been has been, but what will be is the more concerning of things. Mind your thoughts Brandon."
Serenity laughed, "You sound like Tal." She teased, remembering similar conversations. Her eyes got a little sadder, wishing the man was here now. She smiled, "You are going to be a very great Jedi, Brandon. Just like Dante."
"lets hope i skip the dark lord of the Sith phase before i get there" Laughed Brandon rubbing his temples. Changing his mind he reached for a cookie and he chewed it thoughtfully.
" Tell me more, tell me anything " he added to the two of them
Les grinned at what he said about skipping the dark side. He sat forward in his seat and rubbed his hands thinking, "Master Kamatura was a man who suffered greatly at the hands of the dark side. Parts of his body were robotic because of lost limbs and a terrible chest wound that almost killed him. My Master saved him from that death. In the end, Master Kamatura was just as much a teacher to me as my own master. He taught me some very very strong lightsaber techniques that few could rival. I've used a few of them on Master Skywalker and beaten him." He said with a grin.
Les looked over at Serenity, "We still have his lightsabers, Darksaber's lightsabers...Brandon had them. I thought they had been destroyed."
She frowned, "I though they had been as well. They should have been." She said, standing to move over to a chest that had been covered by a thick blanket. In it had been things from her past life. She pulled out a saber, "If you want one of Dante's blades, perhaps this one would better suit you." She said, showing him the intricate looking blade before handing it to him. "I'm not sure where the other is. But I found this back on Degobah a few years ago. Tal Jr. and I went in search of Tal's remains. This was all we found. It belongs to you." She gave Brandon a smile, "After all, we all deserve something from our past." She said, returning to the box and pulling out her old blade, the one that had belonged to Qui-gon, and Tal's blade.
Brandon was speechless, this was what he wanted.. something he could touch. The blades he had belonged to Darksaber and he wasnt the same man. This blade was beautiful. It twisted and curved in a delicate pattern more liquid in appearance that solid. They curved at the end and Brandon was suprised how failiar these blades felt in his hands.
" Thank you " said Brandon, his voice quiet without its usual bravado and arrogance. " Thank you so much "..
Brandon's eyes fell on the other blades. He reached out and held his hand over them.. In a flash he got got images. The first was a man with a sandy beard and long hair duelling a man... what looked like a man. His face was tatooed black and red and he had thorns pushing from his skull. He was fighting this man who weilded a double bladed lightsaber, by his side fought a young man. His face paled with horror as the man dropped to the ground with a hole in his chest. His green lightsaber falling to the ground.. qui gon jin
Then it was another picture, another man. Strongly built and wisdom lined his face. He was stading in a clearing and smiling. A woman walked up to him and held his hand. It was serenity but she was younger.
Snapping out of it Brandon recoiled his hand.
Les stood and walked to the chest, smiling at the thing inside. He saw Brandon's reaction and realized he had had another vision and smiled, "Qui gon's old lightsaber. Qui Gon was Serenity's uncle." Les looked inside again and saw a saber he hadn't seen in many many years. It was his saber back when he was a padawan. Les reached in slowly and picked it up holding it and remembering it. It was slightly rusted and looked like it hadn't been used in a very long time.
"I...I can't believe you kept it!" Les said smiling at Serenity. "How long have you had this?"
"I've always kept it." She smiled fondly. "The last person to use that was Tal Jr. He liked it, too." She laughed at the two. "You're acting like they're something to be reverent about. They're tools, to be used. I kept them for the sentimental value."
"No" said Brandon simply.. He was young and had almost no experience in the force but of this he was certain. Getting up from his chair he walkedinto the middle of the room to ensure he didnt damage anything. With a snap and a hiss the lightsaber Serenity had given him jumped to life.
Brandon closed his eyes before he spoke.. " a lightsaber... this lightsaber is so much more than an instrument. It tells you so much about the weilder"
In a blurry of motion the silver blade move through a series of complicated moves. " Its a window to the soul " murmered Brandon. " See the blade, its light but weighted at the end, this tells me Dante used a very fast form of combat". Brandon moved again with blade humming, " The blade is silver, a very rare crystal, this was Dante's way of telling the world he has renounced the darkness but he intended to fight it. Thats why he chose silver and not white. He intended to fight."
With a snap the blade vanished.. " From such darkness can the light come that leads the way to salvation " He smirked..Sitting back down he stroked the blade and ate another cookie
Les smiled brightly, "You and I think very much a like in that regard Brandon. No offense Serenity, but I've pretty much developed into a Guardian at the Temple. I'm one of the Master's there. I've been instructed to teach lightsaber training. Brandon is one of our star pupils. He has exceeded our expectations 10 fold."
Les hesitated for a moment then turned to Serenity, "I know it's a lot to ask, but I would very much like to have you come back with us. To teach again. You were a wonderful teacher. The Temple is taught by all men, so it lacks grace. Something I know you could provide."
He sighed again, "I know you have a good life here. No conflict, no problems, or worries. But the Jedi Order is still weak. We are lacking in control and numbers. We're trying very hard to find other Force Users before the Empire can start recruiting again. Master Skywalker would welcome you with open arms, especially since he'll know that you taught me. Serenity...mother...I would be honored if you came back with us..."
Serenity watched Brandon, his skill with the blade something else. She thought about Les's offer, sighing. "I don't know, Les. It would be a big change from what I've got here." She gathered up the plate and cups, moving into the kitchen. She put them in the sink, wishing she could talk to Tal. She needed advice, but knew that he wouldn't give it to her.
"I can't do it." She said to herself, knowing that she had spent the past 10 years building a life that she could be happy with. She liked her life before, didn't mind being a nomad. But she wanted her son to have a place to come home to.
She turned against the counter, not knowing if she could do it again. Her life had gone in a different direction. And she hadn't really used the Force in years.
